2019 Interview - Lyndsay Pearson Foreshadowing for Sims 5 Rene?

In a 2019 interview with Sims influencer James Turner (formerly known as The Sims Supply), VP of Franchise Creative for The Sims shares some views.

We've done a lot of different versions of this throughout generations of the Sims. So in Sims 2, because you didn't have the whole worlds continuing at the same time, we had these preset stories that you could play when you started a family. You could play a certain thing with the Goths. You could play a certain thing with the Pleasant. And they were, I thought really cool, as like a jumping-off point. But then everyone else didn't really advance with you. But in Sims 3, we got to the point where as soon as you started a game anywhere, everything went off the rails, because anyone could go anywhere they wanted, which for me and my personal playstyle was a little bit more frustrating. I was like 'no, I wanted to make you best friends, and now you're like, I don't even know what happened to you.' And so, Sims 4 is a different take in that regard. Like you said, it is not creating the same amount of differentiation in the Sims 3.

It seems like Lyndsay Pearson prefers the full-control, "get married with anyone in a day to tell my story" sandbox of the Sims 4. She comments negatively on the open world of Sims 3 with inactive Sims in the world going about their day without here input. Interestingly, she enjoyed the family and neighborhood stories of the Sims 2 (I do too) yet this is largely absent in the Sims 4.

Does she maintain these views? And how will it impact Project Rene development?

  • There was a workaround for TS3: You could turn Story Progression off. I don't actually think Story Progression was ever received as well as intended and I never played that way. Turning global aging off also worked for anyone who did not want all of their Sims to age at once. If you wanted to age them up then their was the birthday cake.
  • More worrisome is that she never understood why the fans reacted badly to the release of Sims 4.

Lyndsay seems pretty unhappy with how Sims 3 played out. I'm curious how they will make Project Rene an open world game but keep it consistent with Sim 2 or 4.
