  • For me the whole presentation of the BTS made very clear that the current target group of the franchise are children.

Sadly, that's true and the animations really 100% gave it away for me. They felt so cartoony and and reminded me of TS4's spaghetti animations which some of them are not very realistic. I just wish their main target group would be a more mature audience, the gameplay and humor would be so funny.
  • I think it looks really good so far, I like how they're making apartments a part of the game from scratch as they can then be a part of every world rather than the problems we've had in the past where apartments have been pack locked and because of this not included in other worlds. Only negative so far is some of the animations they showed look a bit much/too high energy, these can work for some sims but I'd rather have more calm/normal looking animations for the majority.

Just found out TS5 will apparently be free to play upon release. Any hope or excitement I had for this game is now crushed and gone. Free to play at start is never good. There will be microtransactions galore.

Free to play means that TS5 will likely be nothing more than a framework. It won't become an actual game until many, many purchases (read: years) later.

TS4 was the proof of concept and has been spectacularly lucrative, despite it. Now that EA is aware of how willing the community is to be squeezed, there is no longer any reason for excuses and subterfuge.

True, but I hope we can't really judge the new game yet. My point was rather about the style of the show itself. People have often criticized that TS4 was made "for teenagers", but this show was made for 7-year olds. Compare this with the dry, nerdy humour of a TS3 livestream from 2013 and you feel like a century has passed (and not a good one).

Yeah. I don’t think they realize they don’t need to target children to sell the game at max profit. I was 8 years old playing the sims 1 lol. This game has a HUGE age demographic range, so targeting to kids is actually more likely to limit their sales profit because older simmers who are maybe 21+ will not feel as catered to anymore. Their marketing strat is acting as if 18+ people don’t game as a hobby lol.
  • I just wanted to add a note to my observation regarding Rene player hair the other day. Hopefully someone on the dev team has seen the character creator for the game "Lost Ark". It solves the hair colour / weight combination in a really elegant way. A quick search on youtube can bring up a number of videos which demonstrate how they do it, and boy, does it look teriffic.
I wasn't even aware of the game, as I'm not really into that genre - a sort of Korean freemium "throw money at the game to win" hack and slash MMO. Whatever does it for you, I suppose.

Offering the game as free to play at release is a surprising move, they are most likely not going to have any expansion packs ready at release so they would need to have some sort of monetization model.

But I would still imagine that EA/Maxis will design the game so it's still appealing to people that are familiar with the sims, they are not going to have a game that they don't expect that people would not want to play and buy content for.

So Rene will probably have features that appeals to people, maybe features that they were not able to make in the sims4. In fact, if they are going for a free-to play model then they have to focus even more on that part because the success of the game is even more dependent on getting people to play it.

It's NOT a surprising move, it opens up for a 100% micro transaction driven game "as a service". This is a mobile game on PC meant to milk you for money every time you want something.

In other words I will not have anything to do with this since it is a trap to make people spend money.

Actually, it's easier to gain a younger generation to mold into the society you want, and if you read EA/Maxis goal to create a better real-life world with games, then not all their motives for targeting a younger generation of Gen Z and this time even Gen Alpha is about money. For any cause EA/Maxis wants to promote it will be easier in a game for a much younger generation to get them to agree, too.

I'm looking back at these screenshots. Lighting is much better than in the Sims 4 IMO, and what we saw were only prototypes.
