The more I think about it the more I think that Rene still is the "next generation" Sims game because they keep calling it that. So we should take their words at face value. But it's the next generation AND something different (pseudo spin-off) at the same time if that makes sense. It's both spiritually the fifth Sims game but ALSO a standalone live-service game that could just be called "The Sims" (without any numbering).
Ultimately, my prediction is that there will be an overlap period of the Sims 4 and Rene as Rene continues to build. Once a critical mass of players exist on the Rene platform, then Rene will be the go-forward live service platform of "The Sims" with Sims 4 being dropped once it's not making money anymore.
A lot of game studios support and/or release remasters of their old games (You can still get old Elder Scrolls games, there were just remasters of Resident Evil, WOW had the classic servers, etc) because they know people still play them. I would love to see EA do this (and not just that apparently awful 64 bit Mac version of Sims 3). However, it seems like EA wants to erase old versions of their games for...reasons? I don't play Sims 4, but it would be a shame to force people into the new game when they've been playing 4 so long.
I would really like to see that too, EA did a remaster of their old Command & Conquer games once, The Sims 1, 2 and 3 deserve the same treatment.
I'm not sure if licensing or ownership might be an issue. The Sims 1 and 2 are pretty old games now too but so was Command & Conquer.
