Re: Sims 2 disc not reading on Windows 7 computer

@ladygreeneyes649 , it could be something between the computer itself and this particular disk. There is a way to play using what is called a "disk image". What this means is that the computer reads the "disk" directly from its hard drive instead of the disk. I've had to do this for a few games that are older and it works just fine. Once you do this, you do not need to insert the disk into the drive as the computer will read it directly.

Mind you that these instructions were written for installing the game directly from disk images instead of the disks themselves. I'll try to modify them to fit your situation as best I can.

1) Insert your Sims 2 CD/DVD into your disk drive. This is the game disk that you usually play from.

2) Open up your local hard drive and go to File and create New Folder. Name this folder "Disk Images."

3) Go into the "Disk Images" folder and create another folder called "Disk1." *Note* If you're installing a version of The Sims 2 or an expansion with multiple disks, create folders for each disk. Label them "Disk2," "Disk3" and "Disk4." It's important you don't put a space in between "Disk" and the number you use.

4) Open up "My Computer" and select your Sims 2 CD. If the autorun comes up, cancel it as well as the installation.

5) Right-click The Sims 2 CD. Click "Explore."

6) Click on the "Edit" tab at the top of the window and choose "Select All." You can also press CTRL+A.

7) Click on the "Edit" tab again and select "Copy." CTRL+C also works.

8) Head into your "Disk1" folder. Go to the "Edit" tab and select "Paste." CTRL+V works as well. Continue until you've copied and pasted the information from all the disks into their appropriate folders.

9) Find the autorun file in the "Disk1" folder and double click it. This should install the game as normal. When you are finished, you can delete the "Disk Images" folder.

Tips

If you encounter any file transfer errors when copying and pasting, try cleaning your disk. If that fails, your disk is either scratched or corrupted.

I do not know if you will need to edit the names of these disks or not. I named mine (when I did it) the name of the game I used it for after I installed the game. Now, I'm not saying you need to reinstall, but having the disk image should allow for your computer to read the disk and allow you to play the game.

Please let me know if this work and if not, we'll find another solution.

  • That's the thing; the DVD drive on this system won't recognize the disc at all.  The disc isn't damaged, and will open just fine on my laptop, which runs Win10, but I can't play properly on that one, due to lag and the cheat console not even opening.  The gaming computer, on which I play TS3 and lots of other games from discs, won't "see" the Fun with Pets disc.  Even opening the file manager, and trying to access it there doesn't work.  It's like there is no disc inserted.

I was able to image the disc in the laptop, using an imaging program, and to copy that over to the Win7 desktop, but the game won't open with it, stating I need to insert the disc.  The game is already installed, and that worked fine, though it's been a few years since I played it.  All discs were working properly then, installed with no issues.  It's playing the game that's the problem.  Install is already done.  What I need, I suppose, is a way to make it think the image is the actual disc, or a way to make the drive see that particular one.  I am guessing that there is something in the system, Windows 7, that is interfering, but I can't figure what that could be.

I know in TS3, I can bypass the launcher, and play the game by clicking on a ".exe" file, but that's with the disc inserted, of course.  In this case, it can't seem to see the disc.  With the actual disc in the drive, it asks me to put in the actual disc.  The Sims 3 opens just fine, with a disc, so I know it's not the drive itself.

@ladygreeneyes649 , the CD drive recognizes the TS3 disks ok and you can play that ok correct? It's the TS2 disk that for some reason isn't being recognized and read correct? Have you tried cleaning the disk with a soft cloth? Sometimes there is something unseen on the disk that is not allowing the disk drive to read and recognize it. You may also need to clean the disk drive itself as well and kits for those can be found on computer retail sites/stores or Amazon and usually aren't that expensive.

Just trying to think of things that prevent the disks from being read properly. Please keep me posted.

  • Yes, that's correct, though my laptop reads TS2 disc just fine.  The desktop reads TS3 disc, but not TS2, for some reason.  I'd play on the laptop, but I can't open the cheat box there.  CTRL+SHIFT+C doesn't work.  Looked all over, some people stated a particular program used the same hotkey, but that isn't in the computer, so no idea there!  Frustrating!!  Something about this PC just can't see that disc.  I don't know if the drive could be flaky, and reading some and not others, or if it's some weird program error, and don't know what to do at this stage.  Disc is good, drive seems to be good, but no joy.  Considering an external disc drive, since I sort of want a Lightscribe one anyway, but no idea if that will work or not.  If it's the drive being particular (which I can't see how that could be it), that might work, but if it's some weird program issue, I'll be right where I started.

I'd play on Origin, except I suspect the cheat window wouldn't open for that on the laptop, either, and on the PC, I do NOT want it updating TS3 to 1.69, and I don't know that I could avoid having that happen.  I've heard a ton of comments from people stating it updated automatically, and they couldn't stop it, and subsequently had tons of issues from that Origin patch for TS3.  I can't even locate data to say if installing on a different user account would work or not.  Any ideas on that?  I don't want it touching TS3, and I actually have TS2 installed via disc, as well, and don't know what putting it on Origin would do to that, or how to transfer games, etc, or if that's even possible.  Just frustrating; wanted to play that older and wonderful game, and I can't get it working.  Appreciate all the help, in any case!

@ladygreeneyes649 , TS2 is no longer available on Origin either to register, purchase or download. Unless you took advantage of the TS2 giveaway prior to October 2018, TS2 wouldn't show up and you'd have to still play from disk. It doesn't hurt to have an external disk drive and maybe it would read the disk ok.

  • It's already listed for me there, since I had pieces of it, I believe, so should be available.  Might try the external drive.

@ladygreeneyes649 , also you can turn off Auto Update on Origin and allow only what you want to update to update. I keep it off, so I can update what I want to when I want to. 🙂
