Replacing the paul.dll file worked by me as well! The only extra thing I had to do was playing in window mode (adding*space* -w in de target path in properties after the " ).
I got this file from the download version of Medieval. I know I've stated first I only had a disk version, but I had to put serial key in origin and I received a digital copy of the game (otherwise it won't work on Windows 8)
Make sure you make a back-up of the old paul.dll file!
