Sims Medieval- sims walking to places

I get to a point when playing sims medieval where the sims cannot walk down the hill away from the castle. They get to a point just below the top of the hill then make the (cannot get there, blocked) emoticon above their heads. I'm at my wits end trying to find a fix or workaround.
