The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection Error and Crashing

Game: The sims 2 Ultimate collection (Digi download)

Device/Operating System(?): Asus laptop, windows 8 (not 8.1) 64bit

Problem: When I try to load Sims 2 from origin launcher or from the desktop icon it loads up a single text box that has no text in it (I think people refer this to the 'Unspecified Error') and the only image in the text box is a red 'X'. I think it might have done this once before I updated my software but I'm not 100% sure.

Solutions tried: At first I removed my mods. Nothing. I uninstalled and reinstalled the system, (some reason it created a second EA Games folder with the sims 2 ultimate collection, but nothing in that folder).

I've gone through these solutions  page with Dawnrunner879103, that1rainbowpig, and KingaLigmans' answers. I was only able to run the game while changing the properties to 98/Windows ME, reduce color to 8 bit (256) color, and run it as admin (I've tried every option on the compatibility list, restarted my computer every time I changed it, but it would ONLY run on these two options).

Crashing: It was at ugly graphic wise, but it was running. I loaded a town, and single sim house, changed the graphics to how I liked it, it crashed. I loaded the same household, didn't touch the graphics, and it ran fine for about 4 minutes then crashed while I just playing normally. Loaded it twice, crashed twice after a few minutes. I loaded a different family with multiple sims and it crashed as it loaded (did this same thing twice as well).

What should I do? How can I run the game without crashing? Can I ever turn up the graphics? Is there a fix for this?

  • @Kararsim , the first thing you need to do is download and install the Graphics Rule Maker. That will insure that the game is properly recognizing your graphics card and should solve some of the 8 bit color issues.

Next, try running in Windows XP mode if you can once you install the new graphics rule.sgr file.

    Please keep me updated.

So I used simsnetworks GRM. My game is running again without crashing! And I bumped up the graphics to my liking! Thank you! I still have the town loading in as black (I can live with that np) but is there a way to make my game bigger than 800x600 resolution? I fiddled around with it, but it never changes. If not, I still want to thank you with the GRM idea!

@Kararsim , actually there is. Go back into the Graphics Rules.sgr and change the Low, Medium and High graphics settings all to "3". You should see them currently numbered "I, 2, 3" and they are at the very beginning.
