I have had a similar problem (I don't know if it's the same) since pets first came out. The intro video (whether skipping or not) will "lock up" the game for a few minutes. I'll go to make tea or something and it'll be working again, but if I go into task manager it says "not responding". I always have a significant delay while starting up the game. However, it's 10 minutes tops, usually around 5.
I thought I'd pass this along, since I can't be the only person suffering the pseudo-freezing. I've had this happen on 3 different computers, so I don't know if it's my game or if I need a patch or what. It's also happening on the Sims 2 Ultimate Collection on Origin. Good luck to everyone!
Edit: Machines I've had: 32bit XP, 64bit Win 7 (twice), all intel processors, XP had ATI card, Win 7 computers had nvidia.

Hopefully this will help someone... being in IT I had a few more tricks up my sleeve 😕mileyvery-happy:
My daughter just got the Sims 2 Ultimate Collection and it crashes before any movie sequence / menu appeared.
Her laptop has a duel video cards installed (onboard Intel for 2D and nVidia 545m for 3D) - and the nVidia Control Panel (under Control Panel) was configurered to use "defaults". As it happens "defaults" in this case was trying to run the game using the Intel onboard crappy graphics.
Personally, if your using nVidia - I would change 2 settings within the nVidia Control Panel:
Both settings under Manage 3D Settings.
So, under Manage 3D Setting - change the detault graphics card from "automatically detect" to "NVidia"
and also change the "Set PhysX Configuration" and set to GeForce (or your 3D card).
Apply settings & try game again. Feel free to skip the movie intro - but do be patient with the loading screen, this seemed to take a while.
If that doesn't work, the readme does say try updating the graphics drivers and also turn off Virtualization in the BIOS if you still have issues.
Virtualization is switched on, on my daughter's laptop so this may only affect a small number of computers.
For reference, nVidia v335.23 drivers was used - the newer 337.88 drivers don't work. As it happens, the newer 337.88 drivers also prevents The Sims 3 from working too. If you struggle finding older nVidia drivers, I've kindly uploaded them here: https://db.tt/3Aqh55Ox
Hope that helps ! 😕mileyvery-happy:

Yup. Took your advice and it worked fine. Patience IS a virtue!

possible fix as it worked for me:
disable origin in-game overlay: origin->application settings->origin ingame, uncheck enable origin ingame
i also had put it in windowed mode by puting -w in the game properties ^ Tried what you did but still freezes

i have the same problem than all of you (i have Win8.1), i decided to check the program files and i think that the base game is not installed, apparently the I-LOVE-THE-SIMS key only installs the expansions, i'm not sure if i'm right, but this could explain why when it freezes on the start screen it says "The Sims 2: Fun with pets collection" instead of "The Sims 2: complete collection"
So your saying to try waiting 10 minutes tops? because I find it says not responding in my task manger ans it always gets stuck on the loading screen, the only way I can get out of it is to hold down the power button on my laptop, my laptop is a windows 8

I have windows 7 64bit and I'm having the same issue. It freezes and says not responding on the "Fun with pets" screen. Have tried updating, and repairing. I also tried to remove the 'fun with pets' files but ofc it just tries to redownload them.

the same happened to me. The 1st time I get to change the house and play for a while but then the game went down. Everytime I try to play again and agains and, if I try to play in an family or go to CAS the game stops running and I get a Sims2 error msg. What I don't get it is that the1st time it took 20 to 30 min to crashe (I did change the setting but fogget to save) but now it has soon as it stops loading the household the game goes down ☹️
I think it can only be solved with a patch to adress the compatibility issues with windows 8
