Just to be sure @Pepperpot8, even the stack of magazines is greyed out? I believe the stack of magazines should be the only available item in the store for that part of the quest.

Yes you are right, you can purchase the magazines but it will not allow you to place them in any house. It stays red in the grid and there is only a Red Cross and not a green tick.
I am really grateful for your response, this is the first post I have made and I wasn't sure I'd done it right.
Ive been playing the game for a few months and I had a problem two weeks ago. The game would not open. After reading other posts I decided to delete and then reinstate the game. A real leap of faith! I thought it had worked but obviously not. The rest of the game seems to be ok.

You need to put the magazines on a table. Either coffee or dining table will work
