As you have chosen not to disclose what type of device nor what kind of connection you are using and also not what kind of capacity your device have or how much space and memory it has, it is very difficult to start to guess what might be wrong

the "many things" you have tried is useless since we can not even begin to guess what they could have been

Soaked the device in lye? It is a possibility, not likely and certainly not recommended but it could be one of the "many things" you have tried
