@rosemow just FYI, I notice that I receive retirement notices somewhat regularly in the game. My sims each have 4 traits each. If I were to guess, it seems like every time I reach a point where I would get a new trait... but I already have four... I am prompted to retire.
Not sure if that is the actual game mechanic, but I've gotten prompted a few times now.

I am getting repeated prompts to have my sims retire also. I think that it is a part of the game design, and serves as a reminder that there is an option to retire.
