I'm confused
It's an interesting game but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing. Is it possible to sell unwanted furniture? Can rooms be expanded? There are always people in the house, can the sim ask them to leave or how do you get rid of them? How do they gain skills? I don't understand the cupcake system. The sim can't finish the 'whatever it is' without cupcakes. That's just not something that makes sense. Why can't they just take a nap or something? I guess in sim world people can't finish conversations without a cupcake.
I wish there was more freedom within the game. In my opinion, the game would be better if it were more open-ended as opposed to a mission-based format. It seems like all there is to do is for the sim to work and after that talk to the people in the house. Trying to build is frustrating. I ended up with a closet size room. Can you delete or sell unwanted walls? Also, how do you start the game over? Do I have to uninstall and re-install?
You can store unwanted furniture in your storage box.
Rooms can be expanded, shrunk, elongated and now, with the newest updated even shaped into different shapes. Some of those options must be bought with sim coins or simcash but the basics of enlarging and shrinking rooms is free.
You can't ask sims to leave. Usually they only stay a few minutes unless you interact with them. There are whole topics here on the forums about tricks to get them to leave if they don't leave on their own.
Cupcakes refills your energy without waiting. Some tasks/quests/events are so long that you can't finish them with just one "bar" of energy plus whatever refills you get for free with your current levels of bed/shower/toilet/tub. To finish those you might need to eat a cupcake and get more energy to finish the task/event/quest. The wedding quest is one that people often have trouble with as it has several 8 hour parts.
You don't sell walls, you hit the room resize button and then expand the walls. You can store an unwanted room if you decide that you don't want to use it right now. to do that, just click the storage box after selecting the room. (Note that it doesn't work with the room that contains your family portrait.)
The game is fairly open ended. Once you finish the tutorials you can decide what to do. There are career hobby and relationship stories to do (lots of them). Many of us here have finished all of the stories and remain active in the game to build and decorate (and rebuild and redecorate) our houses, to build generations of sims, have kids, retire sims and keep the family going. We tell stories with our sims. Some, like @themummyof4, even write the stories down and post links to them here on the forums so that the rest of us can read them. Many of us enjoy reading the stories.
The main draw of the game for many of us at level 40 is the social aspect of it. We attend each other's themed parties, we have relationships with each other's sims, we use the party chat and these forums to communicate. We build stories for ourselves and our sims that often include the sims of our friends. Most of us just have the story in our heads or occasionally in posts here. We also share pictures here.
