I believe prices go up as you level up. I was able to purchase one that was at least 4,000. I have not spent real life money for simoleons (only for sim cash to gain another playable character). You just have to save up. I had my Sims go to work on a long shift at level 10 several times a day. It just takes a lot of time playing the game to speed up each shift. And if you reach retirement, wait a while till your sims can save you up money for the next generation.
