@PaQuilter1 wrote:@rmw8855 Thanks for hosting a party today! Sorry I had to leave. We just can't figure out how to keep a 6 year old rescue dog from freaking out during a thunderstorm. The thunder jacket doesn't help either. Whoever had her before us must have really messed with her head.We know they locked her up in a crate because she had crate nose when we rescued her. Anyone have any suggestions...😢😦😮
Oh @PaQuilter1 I feel for you and your pup. My beautiful girl is the same, bar the nose bit. She has such severe anxiety, that if something scares her, she’s terrified of it forever. We got her from a breeder when she was 8 Months, but prior to us, she went to a family ona farm and we wonder what happened to her there. They said one of them suddenly developed an allergy to her and so they sent her back to the breeder. The breeder then went to show her dogs in Germany and palmed her off to another breeder to mind while she was gone. That breeder then found out she had brain cancer and had to pass her on to yet another breeder to mind until she was sold. So by the time we got her, she was this gorgeous 8 month old German Shephed, who’d been crated her whole life and already lived in five different places before us. She is terrified of the sound of aerosol cans, loud noises and anything unfamiliar. She slipped on our floorboards once and now is very wary of going past a short distance on them. When she gets super excited she gets stuck on the carpet in our bedroom because she wants to run out but there are tiles in the living area off our bedroom and shes scared she’ll slip. Thunderstorms, heavy rain and especially strong wind all terrify her and god forbid someone pick up a broom or something unfamiliar to her. My daughter brought her laptop into the living area where she was sleeping on the other end of the couch to me just th other day and she leapt up and tried to climb on my lap. That’s her default reaction to anything unfamiliar or loud that frightens her, which would be fine if she was a lap dog, but shes about 40kgs and a long haired German shepherd, so not so comfortable for me!! During thunderstorms, i keep her on the couch half on me and when i see the lightning, i start to pat her and talk in a soothing voice to her so when the thunder hits shortly after, I’m already soothing her and i continue doing that. Sometimes during longer storms, when i do this, she’s calmed so much and must realise that it’s not going to hurt her, that she’s even gone and taken herself to the glass sliding door to lie down and look out! It’s horrible when its during the night and she’s outside, but at least her kennel is on a deck beside our bedroom, we have a sliding door to it in our room, so she can hear us through the glass. Mostly she will just hide in her kennel quietly, unless the thunder is really bad. I feel awful if one hit and we’re not home though.
@Finealta Thank you for telling me about your girl. I grew up with German Shepherds. Ours thought they were lap dogs too well except for Fritz. He just thought he was the alpha male...until he met my Dad. 😂
Patting and talking to our girl is what we do too. I just have to keep an eye on her because she gets so worked up she makes herself sick. She's even worse at night time. She's a Beagle/Bassett Hound mix and sleeps on our bed with us and when a storm comes through she knows it's coming before we even hear it. And fireworks are even worse. I'll be glad when winter gets here...no thunderstorms, no fireworks...and no bugs! 😂😁

@dancerlma454 Nope, no yet!
@PaQuilter1 Poor pup. Thankfully mine doesn’t make herself sick from all the upset. It’s winter here so all the fun is now... 😒
The bugs keep her amused in summer lol. Nothing she loves more than chasing flies 😂
