If you are in an alliance system you may notice the AI getting a bit smarter. So it's like the user side web has begun fulfilling the potential in some ways that the original developers imagined.
And its is old, older than many can imagine. You don't rewrite the web you abandon the idea and hope some consortium is thinking about your particular needs. Look at image compression, it took decades to improve which in turn allowed http/html to do something impressive. This is with all the private corporations working on the problem in the end some volunteers outside the private sector did it.
Edit: just running a platform like TA in a browser? I'm guessing lots of emulation running close to the metal. Like Linux it works well for what it was conceived to do.
