Titanfall will not load the first menu screen

I run the game, and it plays the opening EA and Respawn Entertainment videos fine, displays the "all rights reserved/copyright" stuff, and then nothing. Past that point it's just a black screen that I have to close with task manager. I have Windows 8.1 and I've tried running the game as administrator with no luck.
