Some characters can be pesky to find... especially the kids! You can try going into build mode and turning off the buildings so they are transparent in order to find them. That way you can still have roads. Also, if your buildings are set in from the road a bit so that they don't completely cover your view of the sidewalk, they won't get lost behind buildings as easily.

That is amazing idea NeoSec28.
Ps me many ideas being tossed around here and elsewhere but I have to say this one is the simplest and probably the easiest to implement.
