Those people appear to have sprinted ahead, but really they hitched a ride on the donut express.
Keep calm and tap on! :) - I've only got 1,400 pies so far. Not concerned in the slightest, it was easy to complete Phase 1 without trying all that hard. We have to collect more currency for Phase 2 but have significantly more time to do it.

~ no donuts spent, instead I found 1 8) - Yes close to 300 now but I woke up at 4 am.I personally do not get the rushing-with-donuts thing but maybe if you're one of those premium players who already has it all, you have a super abundance of donuts that you have no idea how else to spend. I do take my hat off to them though, they give the rest of us a peek at what's to come!

Nothing tastier than found donuts!- three hours in and I have 2300 pies so I will agree with the rest of you. This should not be a problem especially with the extended length of time.

So I think you're doing just fine. - Thanks for the replies. I finished the first part with ease getting four lots of extra doughnuts from the extra rods so I thought issue 2 would also be a breeze until I saw where my neighbors were. No worries then. Back to tapping!
