Well, I do that also, and the flag thing really was awesome. I bought two or three sets, but then I thought to get more doesn't make sense, it doesn't look good to have such a massive amount of flags standing around. I still have the objective to make my Springfield look good, which doesn't always work out so well. The knight boats were good, but more than two or three... no.
It all depends on how you use them, or hide them. I have about 7 or 8 sets of flags. One is out on my squidport, one is at the airport, the rest you will never see. Same thing with billboards, news vans, jet bikes and knightboats, although things are harder to hide on the water. I never buy more then I know I can hide though. I do agree with you about appearance. I try to have a plan for everything before I buy it.
