Why do people attach their credit cards to their iTunes account. That's just an accident waiting to happen. :(
Well, simply put because it's the easiest and most efficient way. I've had my credit card linked to my iTunes account for years without any problem. I'm sure it opens up the possibility for fraud, and I know it opens up the avenue to accidental purchases, but in the case of the latter Apple support is really good at solving any problems. As for the former, my bank and Apple support together can handle that (if it were to happen).
But how do you buy items in freemium games like Tapped Out? Do you use gift cards or some other alternative, or are you strictly a free player?

Right there is your problem.
There's tax on the donuts,
Ha!
I've bought plenty of items for other freemium games in the past and as far as I can remember there was never any tax...wait, is there? Now I'm 2nd guessing. But Apple is based in CA which has no state sales tax...hmmm. Ah well, if worse comes to worse and they refund the $49.99, I'll just buy a smaller donut package.
