When i was a kid, a man in our town, Mr. Burger, lived across the street from the Chaplins -- who had a home such as you described. The Chaplins' nativity set on the front lawn included a home-made, massive North Star, which blinked on and off throughout the entire night, straight into the Burger's living room window.
After a number of years of gentle hints to the Chaplin's, and increasing frustration, Mr. Burger finally put a big, blinking "Bah, Humbug" sign on his roof, and left it on all night, hoping they'd get the message. They did not. Each year, Mr. Burger made his sign bigger and brighter, and different blinking patterns. No response. So for the rest of my childhood, we had the dueling-Christmas-lights.
My parents found the Bah Humbug sign to be scandalous. A classic example of "Wont somebody think of the children!". But that sign is one of my best childhood memories. :).
I love this.
