I switch over each act as soon as I get the final prize. Since they're charging us for horses, barrels and water troughs this time, I'd rather have potential donuts than event currency.

Donuts aren't guaranteed. I get challenges for money when swapping far more often than for donuts. Then there's Heights crafting supplies. I'm sitting on one for Furniture right now (yuk, yuk). Which means I can't craft any Heights stuff until I get it out of the way.
The best time to do swaps is just before the swap renewal time. For me that's 7 PM. So if I can remember to swap at about 6 PM it's less likely that I'll be stuck with something crappy like "Collect Income From Buildings" or "Complete Character Jobs" for cash.
