Not sure how 12 elf houses would help as you're only going to get the same amount of gifts collected, albeit by more elves.

Also, the multiplier doesn't count towards gift cards - you still get the same amount from presents and tasks.

Elf Houses get you about 50-60 Gift Cards with each tap
Plus you get about 5 gift bags (not presents) with each tap as well.
This is on top of the fact they will also pick up gifts hidden by neighbours.
