Send them when you're going to sleep. I usually get loads of elixir+gold when I check the game again in the morning.

Send only one nerd per attack, target only random towns, when you go to sleep place nerds in houses that have a 12hr or less wait time, then DON'T log in for 12 hours. And I mean don't do it, not even to check your shields, sleep, do a long breakfast but don't login for those 12 hours.
