It's not that the events were hard, but the wrong type of hard.
I liked crafting, I've crafted a fair bit of stuff, but I did not like having to get something I didn't want just to level up.
AND,
I did not like the costs steadily getting more expensive as the event went through the three act's.
So we had loads of little stuff from early on in our towns but few of the big stuff at the end.
Especially noticeable on Moe's Ark, Great Plains & Warmongers were painfully expensive, and to add insult to injury, you could only get 400 event currency from a DC, where previously, you could get 4,000.
It's a question of perspective, my two pence anyway.
I think you're correct in this.
If people complained about one aspect of the game mechanic, EA always seemed to make adjustments to the succeeding event. The problem was, they adjusted things to fix what no one was complaining about.
I didn't mind a gradual increase in cost. It did keep things challenging as currency became easier to get. It became a problem when the cost rose steeply. I too hated the level up mechanics on the more recent events, particularly that space they marked off in which to place crafted items to gain points. I'm still trying to work out what that was supposed to accomplish. Having the items unlock as the new acts opened was fine. I don't see why we were forced to buy unwanted items or quantities of items. Sometimes one of something is enough.
