I have been sending Bart, Lisa and Milhouse to capture just 1 monster (Kearneymon) each time, as that is required for the main quest line. You should be able to have them all fighting 1 monster.
Thanks! I wasn't looking properly as I never had them all free at the same time & just cause the doors were there didn't mean that I couldn't send them!
I made the same mistake. I only figured it out accidentally.
