I think it only works so the simpsons have a huge library of character and places/buildings they can add. I don't think family guy have the same feel unless they open it up to there other spin off sho...

Hmm...I dunno. FG has a pretty large list of supporting and featured characters, although not quite as large as The Simpsons. The Wikipedia entry lists 76 of them, and that list is probably incomplete, as it does not list some of the more recent ones. Considering that FG has been around about 1/3 of the time that the Simpsons has, you have to expect them not to have nearly the same number of characters at their disposal, but enough to get started with? Yes, I would certainly think so.
Same feel? Definitely. FG is all about the cutaways, which TS doesn't use. This makes most of what appears in a TS episode more or less canon, while a great deal of what happens in a FG episode is not.
