Stick with it.
Early on there are times when it seems impossible to make much headway in terms of earning money. I remember when I'd leave the game open so I could get the 5 dollars from Kwik-E-Mart every three minutes or so. Each 5 dollars was really helpful. Eventually the money ball starts growing bigger and bigger though as you get more characters and buildings.
