Actually, that's not true at all.
I have all my house concentrated in the SH area, just because it is more convenient to collect revenue. But I used to have them all dispersed throughout town, and I didn't have more than 2 or 3 houses together anywhere - Springfield is enormous these days, plenty of space to disperse things as you see fit.
KEM farming occupies a very small area for 4 hours at a time, and you can stop building them anytime easily, so I don't know how ugly it really makes your town (for me it's uglier having the main buildings of an event in an isolated part of town, to make access to the current event easier).
Yes, it takes time and effort, of course it does. If you play the game at all and want to get something out of it, everything takes some time and effort. For me, donut farming takes less effort than, for example, going through an event like the one that is just ending (I can relax on donut farming anytime I feel like it; for an event, if I relax too much I risk missing some of the prizes).
