Visitor id's actually existed until whacking day. Until then the friends list was in alphabetical order. I guess they scrambled the list thinking egg gifting would be more fair. I have no idea why they took the id's away. There was no good way to know who was leaving you eggs so you could reciprocate. I'm glad they brought the id's back, now I wish they would sort the friends list alphabetically or by level.
