you either have to disable them all or have your phone on silent.
well i don't know what device you have but ion an iphone you can change the notifications
i have mine set to get the on screen messages but the audio notifications are disabled. has been this way almost since day 1 because i agree homer yelling "better them than me" can be quite annoying especially when you are sleeping.
How did you turn off the audio notifications but not the message notifications?
if you have an iOS device do the following as i don't have android so i have no idea.
this is all done from the phone not from the game
1. go to settings
2. go to notification center
3. select tapped out.
4 turn the selection that says sounds off.
you can modify other notification settings for the game in here if you like.

As far as I can see, the "Music" controls the music playing in the game, the "SFX" controls the sound effects like tapping on buildings in the game, and the "Local Notifications" turn off notifications completely (I still want to keep the notification messages).
