Then you could say coffee is the gateway drug to pills; growing up/older, maturing to pills and then running on pills. It's a social commentary like the Simpsons always have been. So I don't think it's an oversight at all to have those be the building blocks, and most used items.
New England certainly runs on Dunkin! There's one on nearly every corner. I think they are really stretching it though to say that the world runs on it.
