As mentioned a few times, the game is being balanced on donut farming. Provided you're farming in moderation (I'm not even talking about the house farm guys with 1000% plus multipliers) I personally find you can get way more by spending the same as you always have.
Two years ago I had to make hard choices based on what I wanted vs how much I was wiling to spend a month. Now I spend about the same, but I don't have to make the hard choices, just the easy choices to how much I'm willing to spend to get some of the extras. I don't get everything, but the same amount of money gets me way more than it did a year or two ago. I'm pretty happy with where they are (though you're right, there's way more premium items than there used to be - but many of those premium items are also really easy to pass up).
