I'm in the middle of a massive redesign of my town, so I've been testing this limit out the past couple days. I've emptied out almost half my inventory on to bare spaces of land to keep trying to hit the limit, and haven't gotten the warning yet. I was barely under 3,000 as I removed just enough for all the new buildings, so at the very least, if there is a limit, it's been raised. I'm going to keep emptying my inventory, so if I get the warning, I'll post about it.
