The primary issue is longer loading times at start. Then you'll notice more rendering glitches, like fountains that look like a jumble of randomness. Then you may start seeing flickering of every one of a certain item. But that's up around 7000 so don't worry as long as you have a fairly new device and aren't running other processes at the same time.
If you keep getting the message repeatedly, just add a couple items so you are above the number triggering the warning.
I'm on an old Nexus7 2012 edition, with 6300+. But i keep ALL my notifications off, which really helps conserve device resources.
