We need to be online because the towns are stored on a server. I like it, because I can access my game from anywhere. There are games that only store data locally, and there's no way to transfer them to another device. This makes me a sad panda.
It's designed as a social game, so of course visiting other towns is going to play a role. Social games are a huge genre. (I'm just glad this one doesn't require facebook, because I tried it and couldn't stand the interface, so I don't have an account anymore.)
Might want to have that rash looked at.
And you know the "Other Springfield" (the drone town) is run from EA headquarters, right? If you're that worried about it, you really shouldn't be visiting that one like at all.
