I think an acceptable solution would be to limit 50 friends, but get another 2 rows of lands - yeah I went there.... :)
To be honest the game only asks you to have 5 friends (per the friend quest). Outside of Whacking Day, events were able to be completed with like 10-20 friends. So anything extra just makes you finish early - so you can complain there is nothing left to do after a week in.
