My advice is Otto, he's awesome.

Luanne comes with her own quest line, as well as initiating the "Investorettes" quest when you advance far enough. She's been a feature in past special events as well.

Don't know who you have so it's hard to say, I'd go for one of the main characters. Frink ( as suggested ) is a classic. Barney is a good one, but you'd need to save more for him. My first premium character buy was Santa's Little Helper who was a NPC at the time and not very useful, but I do consider SLH one of my favs.

All 3 of them are free characters. You dont have to buy them.
