I don't know what you two are doing wrong, but I'm a couple days ahead of the calendar right now. I just check in every 4 hours or so, clear bandits, and send people on task. It's not hard at all. I don't even visit neighbors.
Of course, it's good I'm ahead, since I'm going on vacation for 5 days with no internet, so I'll still be behind when I get back. :?
If I so desire, I get to spend more time with the game on the weekend, but during the weekdays the idea of checking in every 4 hours is simply wishful thinking. Gotta job and other life commitments. I consider myself lucky if I can check in once in the morning and another time in the evening.
I think that this is probably the core issue here. Historically, players unable to check more than a couple of times/day tend to fall behind. Usually the events are paced so that someone who can check 3-4 times/day can usually keep up, and those who can check every 3-4 hours can surge ahead.
Not judging anyone's life or choices (everyone has their own real life issues and commitments), but it doesn't seem to me that this event is more or less onerous than usual. These events require you to play fairly frequently and if you are unable to do so this is likely the primary reason why it will be difficult to complete.
Ill respectfully disagree. In past events, even when limited to checking on my town 2 times a days, Ive never had any issue with keeping pace. For that matter, the same is more or less true with this one. Im a bit behind schedule, but not by much.- Typically past events I'd log in more than twice a day - but right now I'm at twice a day as the game doesn't run on my phone (since it can't download the data - thanks low storage space). I'm keeping pace just fine, so not sure what everyone else is doing. I know I have all the eligible characters - I spend the time clearing every bandit, and clearing all the buildings. Only trading like 6-8 trades a day. Not even visiting neighbors either. So if I'm able to keep pace at twice a day with just the required characters, then that's saying something. The only additional thing I have is that premium building for an extra 5 bandits.
I haven't unlocked Krusty Burger yet, might be tonight. - I just hate crafting. I gave up on SH because of the tedious crafting and only keep going on the monorail because of the donuts (I have no idea how many rails I have in storage). I do wish they would go back to community prizes. At least then new players or those who couldn't play often got something out of the event.
- I am loving this event. Yes, I sigh when I reach the General Store limit and don't see the point of the fences reward (more rocks please!), but for the first time since starting TSTO I am near the top of the event leaderboard!
I also finally realized that similar to the last Halloween event, the bandits yield pick axes or hats depending on which "craze" was last started. I try to start Belle or the Rich Texan on the last craze then switch to the other so all possible characters are employed.
I did buy the movie set, but haven't otherwise spent donuts.
Changed my mind about the bandits following the craze. At least the ones generated by the Simpsons house etc. don't seem to follow the craze. cjryder625 wrote:

In my eyes, there hasn't been crafting yet. The mechanic in this event is IDENTICAL to the monorail event. Generate resources, trade in for event currency. Straight up. No collect 40 of this, to get 1 tree, or 160 of that to get a building.
True there are "daily prizes", but those aren't crafted. Just a reward for doing what you should be doing to earn the event prizes.
So in all fairness, this event is nothing like SH, it more resembles what we did in the monorail event.- its not really crafting. Its just a daily challenge, giving you a prize. Its also not new - I think the first time we had this was a couple Christmases ago and also Stonecutters. Its a pretty straightforward / easy event.
