No Snakes, Skeletons or Bunnies???
Don't send them to the same Brown House. You don't want to collect them all at the same time.

After playing around this afternoon, it looks to me like there is some sort of limit on the number of nightmares that can spawn at once. It looks like it's maybe 10 and any over that will then spawn from the campfire. It also seems to be linked to the number of nightmares per kid and any that take you over the 10 get spawned at the campfire.
So for example, I have Bart, Database and the twins that give skeletons. Bart gives 2, Database gives 2, Sherri&Terri give 8. When I clear the brown house with those kids in it, I get 4 from the house (Bart's and Datbase's) then the twin's 8 will spawn 1 at a time from the campfire.
For rabbits, I have Milhouse, Ralph, Rod, Todd, and Uter so 2, 2, 2, 2, and 4 bunnies. So I got 10 bunnies from the house and 2 spawned later from the campfire.
For snakes, Lisa, Hugo, Nelson, Ralph & Janey at 2 each. I got all 10 snakes from the house.
For zombies, Martin, Michael, Kearney and SVT so 2, 2, 4 and 4 zombies. 8 zombies from the house, 4 from the campfire.
The campfire spawns nightmares 1 at a time and at the rate according to your campfire level. The town and bank of starspawn also needs to be cleared before you start tapping brown houses with kids, else they get thrown into the mix too.
tl;dr - clear town and bank of all starspawn before collecting nightmares; try having no more than 10 nightmares per brown house.
