First off, good call.
Personally, my only complaint about WD was that it was so time consuming. The prizes were great, and it was truly a grind (which I wasn't able to finish). There's since been a fix that makes visiting neighbors faster, which is awesome.
I felt mostly meh about the community prizes when we had them. They were, however, a great way to keep people playing after completing the event-related-quests, and that was smart, whether the numbers were fixed or not.
The first event I participated in was Halloween 2012. That was the format I liked best, because we were able to earn currency and get only the items we wanted. If that model were still in play, those who want a bunch of Easter fences could have as many as they could afford, and those that can't stand the egg piles wouldn't have them clogging up their inventory. It was nice to have choices in reward for our time and effort.

One of the main complaints as of late, is that all of the dedicated players hate the randomness of the wheel/boxes during big event updates. You want to actually earn something over time instead of spending hours collecting eggs/snakes/whatever only to get a bush or a tree. I get it, it sucks. Also, there was a time last year where we'd collect snakes and for getting a certain amount, we'd unlock a certain level prize. The more time you'd spend on an event, the cooler the prize would be. The only problem, though, is that we complained about that, too.
