I dunno... I couldn't be bothered being more scientific about it, but it seems very much to me that it's not at all random. I always choose box 3 on the Maggie game. It consistently returns 3 donuts, occasionally 2 and very, very rarely just one.
The level-up boxes though, I get a single donut probably about half the time. I could be perceiving a pattern or formula that isn't there, but I know I'm surprised when I don't get 3 donuts on the Maggie game and equally surprised when I do get 3 levelling up.
On two seperate occasions I've done sample runs of between 1000 and 2000 opened bonus boxed from levelling up after hitting level 939, I deliberately logged where the 1, 2 and 3 donuts fell in the boxes and on both occasions it was near enough to call it equal between the 3 possible boxes (can't remember exactly but it's around 31.xx, 33.xx and 34.xx%) so a fairly equal chance of any box.
