Overtime Mystery Boxes

How do the Overtime Mystery Boxes work? I understand I have a chance at donuts. But what is this chance? Do I choose from random mystery boxes to possibly earn donuts in some of them? What are the other prizes if I don't get donuts?

Is this for every 4,000 additional foam fingers I collect?

Every 4000 foam fingers, you get to play the bonus game. It's almost exactly like the bonus level game, except it costs $150,000 for each extra try. If you haven't run into that yet: It pops up 3 boxes in front of you, and you pick one. If you get 3 donuts, great, hit collect. If not, you have the choice of paying $150,000 to try again on one of the other two boxes (or taking what you got). If the second box isn't 3 donuts, you can pay another $150,000 to try a third time, by which time you're guaranteed 3 donuts.
  • Same as levelling up - pick one of 3 boxes, which will have 1, 2 or 3 donuts. If you don't get three, you can try another box for 150,000 game cash.

    Edit: ninja'd

So what are the two boxes without donuts? Nothing?

Sorry, each box has 1, 2, or 3 donuts, as HappyGamer73 explained.
  • By the way, my guess (being a programmer), is that the way this is implemented is to generate a random number between 1 and 6 inclusive and use that to index a table of the 6 possible distributions. Then put up the GUI. Hence where the donuts are is probably already determined before you choose a box. That table was found in the files during the Stonecutters event; adding evidence to my guess.

  • At one point during the Superhero event, the 3-donut box would shift one box to the left each time. It was so nice not having to blow $300k for 2 extra donuts. Hasn't been working for me since, though. No pattern I can find. Killed my wallet during the Endless Bob thing on the last event.
