This is assuming you're taking a screenshot correctly (holding the power button and clicking the home button, or vice versa):
Your home button could be screwy, do you have trouble using it to open up the multi task bar? The home button on my ipod is somewhat broken, it takes 10 tries for it to work. What I did was go to the settings and turned on home button accessibility. This puts a home button on your screen. You can also try re-callibrating it, but some people say this doesn't really do anything. Here's a video that explains how to do both.
