Tbh i have always waited for the presents to appear before moving onto the next town, the only thing i do make sure of tapping before moving on is when i see a donut appear, i know it will be fine but...

I always wait. I tap twice quickly then wait a couple of seconds then tap 3. Then tap the presents, xp and money and typically it is ready to click okay shortly thereafter.
Just in case, I make sure the FED button isn't over a present house so that I don't accidentally tap the present. Hasn't happened yet.
