Not true, unfortunately. No tasks affect the Righteousness rating, not going to church nor jail-time. (On the flipside, Snake can rob as many stores as he wants, and Legs & Louie beat up on shopkeepers and it won't affect it at all!!).

Only graffiti (left uncleaned in your town, or you leaving in others') and failing to catch Sideshow Bob (in your town or when you visit friends) drop Righteousness. The game coding says as much, as multiple people delving into it can report.

The reading is occasionally problematic, with it dropping to 0 sometimes, seemingly arbitrarily. It's glitchy, but with Training Walls you're guaranteed not to drop below the points they provide, so you'll always be safe at 5*.
