You are guaranteed to have a neighbour that visits you! Lots of people have more than one town, commonly referred to as feeder towns, they can be helpful during events.

That's one point I did think of but I cant see that as a big advantage as my friends list is nearly full and I get visits every day on events and non events.
It depends on the event. For the monorail event, it is quite pointless. For events where you can drop a special currency in the town, it is much more helpful. Not sure how long you've been playing, but a better example of this is Halloween 2013. The player was given gremlin eggs to drop in neighbor's town. The player could drop up to 10 in neighbor's towns.
Taking this to the feeder town, you could give your main town 10 eggs, go in and clear them (so you'd have room from other neighbors). Then in return you could deposit 10 eggs in the feeder town. If they were not cleared in 4 hours, you got a huge bonus. So both methods helped the main town significantly with additional event currency.
I don't think we've really had a recent event that had this type of neighbor mechanic, but never say never as it can always return.
