The only issue I see with an airport being added to the game is that it would either have a giant land footprint or be scaled so small compared to the other buildings that it would look silly and totally out of place.
The airport area I've built from other items is one of my favorite parts of my town...don't have time to upload screenshots this morning, but it has El Chemistri as the terminal building, Up Up & Buffet, the metal Christmas Tree whose lights flash with a similar sequence to the Up Up & Buffet sign, the Duff Blimp, Hover Copter, Ray Gun, and a runway with somewhat accurate markings made with shrubs. The Black Box and Strip Club are located just outside the airport fence for off duty pilots. I've actually found it a nice way to group some items together that would have been difficult to place otherwise!
