Nearly everything you but in game with cash gives some xp when placed in town. The idea is that these two cost a fair amount and the XP bonus (which is 10% for most items) so you have to do this less often. It could work with many other items but it would take longer with low-cost items. So the idea is you buy a lot of them just for this XP placement bonus and either store or (preferably) sell them to offset the initial cost.
Just don't do this with aspirational items - the xp return is terrible.
