Why would I want stronger town defense?
I stopped upgrading my castles for this reason. However, learning that you get wall pieces when upgrading past 20 is tempting. I have no desire to pay donuts for Bart and Lisa's wall pieces.

Although... for some reason I love the way Bart's cardboard castle pieces look, so maybe I'll upgrade that one to get some more pieces...
I also plan to use the pieces for other things. I may not store anything, but I may not keep the castles together. We'll see how it ends up.
